David's Persepolis Blog Week 2: Snippets

On page 102, Satrapi tries to explain the idea that children we so easily captivated by false ideas. The children wear keys on their necks because they believe that if they go to war and die, the key would get them into heaven. The panel shows how the children die in explosions. The panel perfects this as the children are being stabbed by the black marks. The picture relates to the theme of power is control as the children feel like they have power to where they end up in the after life.

  1. I also liked this discussion of the panel of the children during the bombing versus the children dancing. The necklaces were also a great juxtoposition between the meaning of peace and war. However, I don't agree with you on the theme as power is control and "the children feel like they have the power to where they end up in the after life."
I believe that the children need hope, and the key is something that gave them that. The children don't feel like they have the power to go to the better-than-disneyland afterlife, so they are brainwashed by the people who can take the sadness away. Also, I think power and control would be more like motifs to Persepolis, because the graphic novel does include those for sure, but I don't think those concepts really surround Marjane.
